Eye Health Education

Here are detailed explanations of some eye diseases you would need to know about

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, impairing vision. This cloudiness is usually caused by aging, though factors like diabetes, smoking, and excessive sunlight exposure can contribute. If untreated, cataracts can worsen and may eventually lead to significant vision loss, treatable through surgery where the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, often due to abnormally high pressure in the eye. This pressure can slowly degrade peripheral vision, leading to tunnel vision or blindness if untreated. Although it cannot be cured, medications or surgery can help manage the condition and prevent further vision loss.

Color Blindness

Color blindness is a condition where individuals have difficulty distinguishing between certain colors, most commonly red and green. It is usually inherited and caused by a defect in the color-detecting pigments in the eye's cone cells. While there is no cure, special lenses or adaptive techniques can assist individuals in managing their condition.

Conjunctivitis

Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the thin, transparent layer covering the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by infections (viral or bacterial), allergies, or irritants, resulting in redness, itching, and discharge. While contagious types require medical treatment, allergic and irritant causes can often be managed with over-the-counter remedies.

Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes fail to produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, causing discomfort, redness, and a gritty sensation. Common causes include environmental factors, aging, medications, and prolonged screen use. Treatments range from artificial tears and lifestyle adjustments to medications that address inflammation or other underlying causes.

Eye Strain

Eye strain, also called digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome, occurs after prolonged use of screens or other tasks requiring intense visual focus. Symptoms include headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, and neck or shoulder pain. To alleviate it, taking regular breaks, adjusting lighting, and using appropriate eyewear can help..

I had my last appointment on 1/15/25. It was to ascertain my eye presure. The doctor attended to me with much care. At the end of the test, I was assured of normalcy in the pressure. I should continue applying the eye drops correctly. I felt much relieved
